Check out this info-graphic (click on the image above).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Advocacy Committee is engaging in the following issues:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Service Delivery Plan of 2015<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Service Delivery Plan specifies the activities of Athens-Clarke County (ACC) Public Utilities and Transportation &amp; Public Works departments will take to deliver safe drinking water, treat sanitary waste, and mitigate stormwater runoff for the next twenty years.<\/p>\n<p>UOWN reviewed the plan and discovered two areas of concern: extension of sewers into the greenbelt and expenditure of $20 million for water reservoir pre-planning.<\/p>\n<p>The Advocacy committee sent a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uown.org\/UOWN-Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/ServiceDeliveryPlan_UOWN_comment_2016-04-121.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comment letter<\/a> to the ACC Mayor &amp; Commission, created a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uown.org\/UOWN-Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/press_release.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>, and delivered <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uown.org\/UOWN-Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/reservoir_ACC_MC_comments.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comments<\/a> in person.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Non-potable Water Reuse<\/strong><br \/>\n(coming soon)<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"widget-title\">State<\/h3>\n<h4>SB116 &#8211; Reduction of Stormwater Fees<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.legis.ga.gov\/legislation\/en-US\/Display\/20172018\/SB\/116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SB116<\/a>, Sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.senate.ga.gov\/senators\/en-US\/member.aspx?Member=751\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senator F. Ginn<\/a> (district 47), proposes that property owners be allowed to opt out of stormwater fees if they can prove their property is &#8220;water neutral&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>UOWN joins the <a href=\"http:\/\/us14.campaign-archive2.com\/?u=169a94009d1747cd19f1c62b3&amp;id=3ff66372c8&amp;e=6244abadd2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia Water Coalition<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmanet.com\/Legislative-Session\/Bill\/SB116\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia Municipal Association<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ciclt.net\/sn\/leg\/l_detail2.aspx?ClientCode=accg&amp;L_ID=1383669&amp;L_State=ga&amp;L_Session=2017-2018&amp;L_Prior=2015-2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Association of County Commissioners of Georgia<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/onlineathens.com\/2017-02-22\/stormwater-utility-fee-saves-money-and-benefits-all-residents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Athens-Clarke County Government<\/a>&nbsp; in <span style=\"color: red;\">opposing<\/span> this bill.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uown.org\/UOWN-Wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/UOWN_stormwater_fee_position.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read our position statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Would you like to be UOWN&#8217;s champion on the issue of stormwater fees? Contact us via <a href=\"mailto:advocacy@uown.org\">advocacy@uown.org<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Coal Ash Pond De-watering<\/h4>\n<p>Georgia Power Company is proceeding with plans to close 29 ash ponds at 11 of its coal-fired generation plants across the state with inadequate oversight from EPD. These plans include efforts to drain water from those ponds and discharge it to the state\u2019s<br \/>\nwaterways. Ash pond water is known to contain toxic substances like arsenic, mercury, lead and selenium.<\/p>\n<p>Of concern to UOWN is the closing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/@33.1924073,-83.3026709,1033m\/data=!3m1!1e3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plant Branch<\/a> in Eatonton. Georgia EPD is allowing Georgia Power to release treated water from coal ash ponds into Lake Sinclair.
